Are you forgetting that MY life was one of those put in jeopardy when we went to Arklay?
"[bitterly]No, I recall quite clearly that you came to help AFTER we descended into that decrepit asylum and got ambushed!"
Of COURSE I didn’t know he was connected to Arklay. Why would I? ‘Oh, hi, how are you doing. Before we eat, do you happen to have any connections from 10 years ago to any creepy mansions in the woods? Just a routine question.’ Please.
Haleigh looked relieved but also vindicated.... as if she'd been EXPECTING that answer and was pleased to be positively confirmed. She gave a small, apologetic smile as her tone turned to a playfully sheepish ribbing.
"Well, call me old-fashioned.... but I always felt that in a serious relationship, both partners ought to know each other's background quite well... especially in a relationship that is physically intimate..... and CERTAINLY if creepy mansions might be involved."
Look. I’ve been seeing him. I didn’t know he had any connection to anything to do with our extracurricular lives.
[ She sighed and looked down. ]
It was just nice to have something for myself, just this once.
"[with a look of genuine understanding]Yes.... that DOES sound nice.... but don't you think that for a person like YOU... or ME ... or ANY of the rest of the six... for somebody in OUR position, don't you think that would be one of the BIG questions to get answered up front? Kind of like making sure you're not going to bed with a serial killer? [off on a tangent]Well.... a serial killer... that's contextual, isn't it? I mean, technically he WOULD be one. but then so am I.... and you too... alright, so the serial killer analogy was a bad one. but you get the idea-- a chainsaw murderer, okay? That kind of thing... you'd like to make sure he wasn't sent to kill you before you invite him into your home, right?"
But MY credibility has never been a problem on this team. I give 110% of my life to the Six, I would do ANYTHING to protect my teammates. And you should know that.
"I DO.... hey...[touching Delilah's arm gently] I KNOW that.... that's WHY I waited until we had a little privacy to confront you about this, alright? It's just.... this cavalier, DEVIL-MAY-CARE attitude of yours? It's making me worry.... and I'm not the only one. I saw Ava and Alison exchange looks... and I suspect that's why Ava volunteered herself to stay behind and talk strategy with Alison. No offense to my sister, I love her to death... but she's always been good at checkers, you see.... Alison and I... we play chess. Alison must have told my sister something... maybe not particularly ABOUT you... maybe just about one of us acting in interests that don't exactly coincide with the objectives of the team-sanctioned mission in Arklay... you KNOWING this guy and not saying so doesn't look good for you. What I'm trying to say is... if you don't want people to be SUSPICIOUS of you or your motives or loyalties, then stop acting so damn squirrelly. Call it friendly advice."

[ She turned to face forward once again. ]
So the next time you want to threaten me in an elevator, come with something more than paranoia.
Haleigh turned to face forward as well, and she pressed the stop button again, releasing the elevator and sending them shuttling down to the lobby once more. She clasped her hands behind her back and shrugged lightly.
"Hey, you call it paranoia.... I call it a heightened sense of awareness. There's been too many times when relying on my instinct and paranoia has allowed me to scrape by with my life. I'd like to be a completely logical, totally rational being, that would be ideal for a hybrid like me. Trusting my FEELINGS... being overly suspicious when I have no real proof or reason to be, that upsets my calculating, computer-like mental hardwiring.... but I can't turn my back on instinct... not when it's kept me alive this long. And just so we're clear.... I don't intend to apologize for coming at you the way I did. I won't feel guilty for protecting the people I care about from a possible betrayal."
The elevator dings and the doors open. Haleigh gestures for Delilah to go first and then steps out, walking close to her and keeping her voice down.
"It's difficult to know just how MUCH St. James knows about us.... I find it hard to believe that he wouldn't be aware that you at least knew OF the former district attorney Alycia Barnett. You're a cop, she worked for the state, it follows. How much he knows about ME is also questionable. I plan on feeling him out and sticking to the truth whenever possible. I'm interested in going to the mansion. I want his help. If he wants to know WHY.... it's simple. Clandestine, my company, has had a LONGSTANDING and well documented underground rivalry with Mystech, but we're a much younger corporation. I've got them beat in technological splendor, but I haven't made NEAR the advances in the scientific field that they have. Only the Six and direct allies know that I've turned over a new leaf, so it will make sense to those who still believe I'm a Big Bad that I might be looking into branching out into competitive scientific experimentation, especially with Mystech nearly gone. I'd have all sorts of latitude and with a main competitor struggling to find funding and a decent lab, I could EASILY score big financially. I'm NOTORIOUS for wanting to know everything and researching the START of Mystech's genetic experimentation would be a characteristic move for me. I'm good at providing details on the fly and you can bet I'll be watching him closely to gauge if he believes us-- or if he's lying to us..... so don't think I'm checking him out or undressing him with my eyes or anything, alright? I've been told I'm a pathological flirt... just so you know. I ASSURE you, I don't think it's right to swoop in like that on another woman's... prospect."
