Meeting

<< The look on Carole's face said it all as Nicolas offered his response.>>

<< This young man simply didn't know when to stop!>>

<< She was about respond with a withering and severe response a descision when Dominique stepped in and checked her nephew but good, silencing him.>>

<< Dominique was always one of the more involved parent/parental figures of the student body at Hillcrest. She'd used her clout and draw as a successfull chanteuse to stage several successfull fund raising events for the school's various ongoing activities and mutant outreach programs. She was beautifull, intelligent, accomplished and like Carole, she was a witch! their status as witches and the knowledge of each other was one of those unspoken recognition moments between them that they kept to themselves.>>

Dominique said:
As I've told you before, Nicolas was NOT raised in an environment where violence, disrespect of authority or foolishness are condoned or tolerated.

<< Carole hardly thought ill of Dominique because of Nicolas' foolishness. How could she. Ultimately...Nicolas was a prankster and brash young man BUT it generally appeared he meant no harm. Carole, however, also had a son...>>

<<FLASH!>>

<< Blaze Victor, lies dead after several seconds of painfull, bloody, knife plunging terror at the hands of her BROTHER.>>

<< Carole shut her eyes tightly, blinking back tears as her mind once again touched on a trauma that had forever changed everything.>>

<< Carole? More like KAREN. A boy who didnt joke or play. He hurt, brutalized and MURDERED. and WHY? well no one ever quite figured that out, not even SHE, despite 8 years of intense psychotherapy and the best diagnostic/treatment options money could buy. But nobody....not Alycia Barnett...not one person ever thought LESS OF HER despite having a son that turned out to be a BAD SEED.>>

Dominique said:
Dr. Starr, I must also express my deep apology to you personally once again for my nephew's behavior. I realize your position as headmistress requires you to be available to ALL students and faculty on this campus and to have to devote an excessive amount of time on any one student- especially for BEHAVIORAL problems- it must leave a bad taste in your mouth.

That being said, I still must OBJECT to your having my nephew arrested and charged with stalking and harrassment. As well as flagging his premanent record with notations of a personality disorder. These are things that will follow him indifinitely and in today's post 9/11 world...could negatively impact him in any number of ways.

<< Carole stood, listening to Dominique. But when Dominique voiced her objection to Carole's severe response planned for Nicolas, the doctor stood steadfast, folding her arms and shaking her head.>>

I'm sorry, Ms. Deveraux. What you're nephew did is beyond intolerable. The family of the victim is demanding action and if I do not take the appropriate measures, Hillcrest could face a lawsuit. That kind of publicity would be VERY bad for the privacy and anonymity this facility enjoys and for the students that its a haven and home to. Am I supposed to risk the home of these students, some of whom aren't nearly as fortunate to have an active, involved parent/parental figure like you in their lives, JUST to accomodate a young man who constantly demonstrates a lack of regard if not UTTER CONTEMPT for the rules and regulations of this institute that has resulted in DAMAGE time and again to the property that you have personally covered the expense of repair for and NOW has put a young girl in the hospital?

As headmistress, it would be irresponsible and unconscionable of me NOT to address the VALID concerns of the family of the victim of his crass prank, and to NOT take actions to protect the school as a whole. How long before the victim of one of his prank's is physically injured if not worse? How WRONG would I be NOT to stop him before he can even get to that point?

Your nephew behaves as though the sun rises and sets with his every breath. It's time he understood that is not at all the case.

Hillcrest- meeting

[ Dominique was a business woman. She understood the need for discussion, debate and above all else- negotiation. She and Carole had enjoyed a cordial relationship for several years now. She found Carole to be a bit...HIGH STRUNG at times...but she attributed that to Carole being a widow with a young daughter juggling the careers of doctor, headmistress, counselor and mother all at once. It couldn't be easy. Dominique had no idea what lay BENEATH the FACADE of "Carole" and the true reason behind her "high strung" if not at times seemingly UNHINGED nature. All of that aside, Carole's reputation as a thorough, efficient headmistress who helped mutants was well deserved.]

[ She listened to Carole's response. There was no doubt this was serious and Nicolas academic career and future were now at stake. Carole was NOT one to be deterred easily and what Nicolas failed to realize was that even IF the costume/scare tactic was as "minor" as he believed it to be. that, ON TOP OF EVERYTHING ELSE over the last several years had a CUMULATIVE effect!]

Dr. Starr, I am not at all suggesting that Nicolas be given a free pass. Far from it. I am however stating that your intended course of action is quite severe and wide reaching. You're reacting as though my nephew is psychotic and capable of MURDER.

Carole Starr said:
I'm a licensed, highly credentialed psychotherapist, Ms. Deveraux. I have over 20 years experience in the clinical field. If i AM implying that, I'm perfectly qualified to do so. I've seen young men like him before as patients. I've PROFILED young men like him before...after innocents have been left DEAD at their hands.

[ Shaking her head to the negative, Dominique remains composed and steadfast]

I've no doubt of your expertise and credentials, Dr. Starr. But I think you are being unfair here.

I SHARE your outrage at his appalling lack of judgement, and I am here as his aunt and legal guardian to assist you in dealing with him, but what you want to do...it will all but RUIN his life!

Carole Starr said:
What about my other student, whose life he all but ruined by traumatizing her with a reminder of a HORRIFIC EXPERIENCE.

There's no question that he was WRONG for what he did. I'm simply asking that the punishment be more fitting of the crime. Nicolas has no criminal record.

You ARE a psychotherapist and you have state sanctioned power to order a full work up and psych eval of anyone within the county lines you reside in.

Instead of having my nephew expelled, arrested, charged and branded a pyshopathic stalker...allow him to undergo a complete psych eval to assuage that family's and your concerns. take into consideration his academic record, discipline file aside...he maintains an excellent average and is involved in several extra cirricular activities.

I'm asking for you to take a moment to give this a more detailed and objective assessment. One that I know a doctor of your calibre is capable of. I am on hand to assist you in any way when it comes to dealing with his foolishness and I FULLY agree that punishment is in order. But having him arrested and attaching a damaging mark to his record, it just seems beyond severe and I can't sit by and let that happen without saying something.

Delilah blushed at Ava's mention of a cute boy she'd had her eye on. She wasn't sure that sneaking out to the party was the best thing for Courtney to do - she didn't like to see her friend get in trouble with her mother yet again - but Courtney WAS her friend and she would back her play, whatever she decided to do. And of course, Ava's party would be much more fun if Courtney was there too.

Courtney started to tell them something, then abruptly left. Courtney's behavior recently was bothering Delilah - worrying her. Something was up. And now that they were alone, she and Ava could discuss it. She turned in her seat towards Ava.

"I think something's very wrong with Courtney. We need to help her."

Terms & Conditions

<< Dominique defended her nephew...not his ACTIONS, which clearly she didnt approve of, but his overall chance and future. It was a fair and expected thing for someone in her position to do.>>

<< After a few tense moments, the doctor walked over to a window. One arm around around her waise, the other one held up with her hand under her chin. She was contemplating Dominique's request.>>

<< she opened her opal blue eyes and in the refracted image of the window she saw herself and....walking up BEHIND her....>>

The Shape said:
slow. steady pace. closing in on her. He comes for KAREN. walking RIGHT UP BEHIND HER. He stands behind her. OVER her.

<< Carole's eyes widen for a moment but then she shuts them tightly for a few seconds.>>

not here. not real. not here. not real....not

<< the ghostly image fades away, leaving on her refracted image when she once again reopens her eyes.>>

Dominique said:
... Dr. Starr? Are you alright? You look as if you're having some sort of...discomfort?

<< blinking her eyes a few times.>>

....oh yes....my apologies. A slight headache.

<< Michael had seen moments like that from her before. He wasn't convinced that it was a headache.>>

<< turning toward them again.>>

Ms. Deveraux, you're quite correct. Nicolas' performance in academics, skills/power training is excellent. He also thrives in various extracirricular activities.

<< walking about slowly.>>

His BEHAVIOR leaves much to be desired. I am relieved to know that you DO understand that and share my outrage over this latest, TASTELESS practical joke of his.

<< pausing and casting a disdainfull glare upon Nicolas.>>

Here are my terms.

Nicolas is placed on 3 days in school suspension, effective IMMEDIATELY. A complete psych eval and personality profile must be completed before he returns to regular status. While on suspension he is subject to the monitoring and scrutiny of myself or Sergeant Detective Armstrong.

He is SUSPENDED from all social functions for the remainder of this semester, INCLUDING Hillcrest's Halloween weekend retreat and dance.

His room will be THOROUGHLY searched for ANY unauthorized items that could be used in another practical joke or disruption. This INCLUDES anymore outlandish costumes.

Nicolas is placed on academic PROBATION for the remainder of the year- ONE FALSE MOVE- one report of disruption from ANY teacher about him and expulsion is IMMEDIATE.

Finally, A written letter of apology from NICOLAS to the victim and her family- to be previewed by myself before delievery to them. He is FORBIDDEN to have any contact with the victim from that point forward.

Ms. Deveraux, I WILL advise them of your generous and considerate offer to cover all related medical expenses as well.

I will remove my official request for Nicolas to be arrested and charged with any crime, I will also not enter any adverse reports about him on his permanent record...PROVIDED his psych eval and personality profile return with acceptable results.

These are my terms in exchange for him not being arrested, charged and expelled here and now.

Meeting

[ A look of concerned washed over Dominique's face as Carole seemed to be preoccupied...PAINED even...while standing by one of the windows in her office. Carole assured them she was fine. Dominique wondered if Carole's high strung personality was finally taking a toll on her but the doctor continued on.]

[Dominique nods but Nicolas starts to object, prompting her to lift her hand up in a "stop" motion toward him for SILENCE ]

Dr. Starr, I'd like to ask that you NOT submit even the report of this incident to the Boston PD. I realize the victim's family expects action from you and you have delivered that. There's no need to damage my nephew's record with even a report of this. The school's internal report is confidential, is that correct?

Carole Starr said:
Yes. Provided he does not harrass, harm or assault a student or member of staff OR that he doesnt behave in a way off campus during functions that would draw unwanted legal scrutiny to the school. I will honor your request, Ms. Deveraux and withdraw the report I've prepared for submission to the PD. You've been an involved, active parental figure and you've given me your support but also stood your ground on matters. If only MORE of the parens of some these students could be as involved.

I would like this matter that has been discussed and set on a course for resolution to remain confidential in this room between us.

Carole Starr said:
<< nods in approval>>

[exhaling with relief that Nicolas would not have any legal action taken against him nor would his record be publicly tarnished, the terms of his PUNISHMENT were fine with her. ]

Thank you for being reasonable, Dr. Starr.

Nicolas.

Return to your dorm. I will visit you there before leaving Hillcrest, but before you do...APOLOGIZE to Dr. Starr for your rude, flip attitude. NOW.

[ Dominique commanded with a sharp tone.]

Delilah wasn't the only one who caught Courtney's pained face as she turned around. Paring that with her quick retreat when she seemed like she was about to open up about something, Ava was more than a bit concerned. But what were they supposed to do? Courtney refused to open up, and unless they knew what was wrong, they couldn't help her.

Delilah: "I think something's very wrong with Courtney. We need to help her."

"I know...but we can't exactly help what we don't know, D. She is SO CLOSE to opening up, but something keeps preventing her from doing it. [sighing] Honestly, I think the best way to help her is to keep her distracted. Whether it's that gathering she wants to go to, or the private party we're throwing...I think if we push too hard, she'll pull away even more."

The tense and serious moment was interrupted by Ava's iPhone dinging, indicating she received a new text message. Looking down at her phone, her lips immediately went from frown to smile.

"Guess who's coming to the paaaarrrty."

Turning her phone around so Delilah can see the screen, the name "Alcide" was listed with the message "Def down....is Delilah gonna be there?".

[in a friendly teasing tone] "And he's asking about yoouu!"

With a laugh, Ava knew Delilah probably wanted to kill her right about now, BUT, her friend would thank her later! :D

Nicolas simply sat there while his fate was decided by two witches. His social life was dismantled before his eyes and now he was asked to apologize. So he apologized.

I apologize for your consternation concerning my prank. It did not occur to me that adults saw the bogeyman around every corner. I apparently offer you the rest of my academic year in trade for not lying about the type of person I am. Enjoy.

Nicolas walked quickly out of the office, slamming the door.

Family meeting

[ Dominique pursed her lips as Nicolas offered a backhanded apology. She shook her head with disapproval, making SURE he saw her displeasure as he departed.]

[sighing]

Dr. Starr, thank you for meeting me halfway.

My nephew is brash but he IS essentially a good kid. He'd never purposefully set out to harm anyone.

Carole Starr said:
I've seen his potential, as a creative, active paticipant in the student community of Hillcrest and as a representative for the school at various scholastic competitions across the state. But that doesnt change the fact that he has a problem with authority or impulse control. I AM deeply concerned about his lack of remorse regarding his actions and what it did to our other student.

I will talk to him privately, now that the worst of this is over. He understands that I am JUST as invested in his future as he is...and as his provider as well as his parental figure, he WILL hear me.

Give him a chance, doctor. Don't pigeon hole him based on youthfull indescretion...something we've ALL been guilty of in our day.

Carole Starr said:
On the strength of of our relationship, Ms. Deveraux, along with Nicolas' excellent academic performance, I will make every attempt...as long as he does the same during this time of punishment.

[ After Carole withdrawls all formal charges and documents that were prepared for submission to the police department, She and Dominique bid each other a good day.]

[Dominique exits the office, making her way across the courtyard and grounds of Hillcrest. She is seen by Ava and Delilah. Both are aware of who she is. Even though her genre of music is definitely not of interest to either of them, they know of her reputation and sometimes tease Nicolas for having a "DIVA AUNT" for a legal guardian. AVA, terribly curious to find out the outcome of Nicolas' "Trial" this morning, recommends to Delilah that they quickly follow Dominique to Nicolas' dorm.]

[ She reaches Nicolas' dorm and enters.]

Nicolas!? WHAT THE HELL!

[ she says, slamming the door as she confronts her nephew. As she slams the door, Ava and Delilah have arrived in the hall just intime to hear Dominique yelling at Nicolas and seeing the door slam, now they creep along to eavesdrop]

HOW many times a semester do I have to come up here? Your tuition is almost DOUBLE thanks to the financial consquences of your numerous practical jokes. Dr. Starr is ready to brand you a psychotic stalker with a propensity for VIOLENCE and have this entered into your permanenet record because you dressed up as a serial killer and put a girl in the hospital!

Is THIS the thanks I get for taking care of you? Of providing you with the best educational options money can buy?

What is your PROBLEM young man!?

And don't try that smart mouth routine with ME that you do with Dr. Starr. I'll WEAR YOU OUT here and now.I did NOT raise you to talk to adults like that!

meeting aftermath

<< Carole shakes her head with disgust and narrows her eyes in a look of grim disapproval as she hears Nicolas' "apology"...she's heard more sincere remorse from a republican apologizing after being caught red handed in some scandal on television! He leavs, clearly deflated from his earlier posture and clearly upset as he slams the door.>>

arrogant wretch!

<< Michael has been here this whole time. He expected Carole to take Nicolas to task, but she flat out tried to CRUSH him today. Dominique managed to salvage Nicolas' academic career, his permanent record and his future prospects, but Carole STILL destroyed Nicolas' social calender for the rest of the semester and left him on a tightrope for the rest of the year.>>

<< She was known as being a disciplinarian and most students had a healthy fear of her. Nicolas...WAS infuriating but essentially it was felt by Dominique, various members of staff and even Michael that he was a good kid who was just having fun and sometimes got carried away. Carole busted his chops at EVERY chance but today it was as though she were looking to CRUCIFY him.>>

<< Dominique and She wrapped up their discussion concerning Nicolas and the changes in his punishment were registered and put into effect. The two women bid each other good day and Dominique leaves after reassuring Carole she will speak with Nicolas.>>

<< After Dominique leaves, Carole stands motionless. A few moments pass and when she's sure Dominique is out of the office, Carole erupts with extreme displeasure.>>

DAMMIT!

<< tossing Nicolas' file across the room.>>

That ARROGANT little upstart!

I have tried...REPEATEDLY for the last two years to be long suffering and give him every chance to redeem himself and modify his behavior. instead he takes my consideration and TRAMPLES on it and thinks it's okay. It's NOT! He's a DANGER, Michael.

He put a girl in the HOSPITAL with his tasteless "humour" and now...I have to see my way to explain to her family why and HOW I was able to justify allowing him to REMAIN here.

<< turning to Michael, he sees DISTRESS in her opal blue eyes and her face. though she does not age as any normal mortal due to her magick and is quite beautiful, the stress that she suffers from is almost palpable, even to Michael. At times she does a better job of concealing it, but this time of year..EVERY year...it seems to be MUCH WORSE.>>

<< Sergeant Detective Armstrong has a rather...unique personal relationship with Dr. Carole Starr, Psy.D. They ARE close...and intimate even. That was a development Carole never saw coming in this new life she crafted for herself but ulike what some of the students or even Nicolas and Courtney believe, Carole has not been PHYSICALLY intimate with Michael beyond cuddling or kissing. She can't...won't allow it. Like Courtney, she too has walls that just wont allow for certain things.>>

<< Still, Michael has become fond of her and cares for her. It troubles him to see her suffer as she does but he does not know WHAT it is that's troubling her...only that it causes her to TIGHTLY control her daughter's movements and be seen as a fearsome headmistress by the students and to be absolutely DRACONIAN with Nicolas.>>

<< Michael often quietly and privately has advocated on Nicolas' behalf to Carole, which is why he hasnt been expelled any number of times before but even HE balked at the most recent "prank" of Nicolas' and while punishment was in order, Carole's original plan was just a bit too much.>>

<< NOW, Carole and Michael had a few moments of privacy for talk before she had to continue on with various duties in the morning.>>

Nicolas sits on his bed as his aunt enters...yelling. She berates him and demands an explanation.

Nicolas!? WHAT THE HELL!

Nicolas looked out the window and was very silent for a moment. His face remained stone while one fat tear fell down his cheek. He turned back and spoke again to his aunt.

I appreciate you taking care of me, spending so much to give me the best. I just...just feel caged sometimes, like just being me is a crime to Dr. Starr. You KNOW I am not crazy. I might be a disappointment to you, but I am not crazy.

He turns back to look out the window...Dominique can hear him sniff once, then twice.

[ Dominique's blue eyes sparkled with anger and extreme disapproval at her nephew's behavior and it was time for him to account for it. He knew she meant business.]

[ Dominique's facial exprssion softened just a bit as she beheld her nephew's own pained expression]

[ walking over to him, she places a hand on his shoulder, turning him around to face her]

sit down.

[sitting on the edge of his bed as he sits in a chair directly in front of her, she takes one of his hands into her own]

Nicolas, you're my nephew....for all practical intents and purposes, you are my SON. I took you when you my sister and your father died and raised you as my own. I adopted you. I have not regreted that decision ever. You are NOT a disappointment to me by any means. I look at you...and WISH that my sister could see the beautiful, talented, BRIGHT young man you've turned out to be!

But your BEHAVIOR here at Hillcrest! It is getting OUT OF HAND and I want to now WHY!

This is a private institution for higher learning. One of the FEW recognized accredited institutions geared toward MUTANTS. Sending you here was a no brainer. The benefits have already shown themselves many times over and we both know that.

But dammit, Nicolas! You have GOT to get control of your impulsive behavior. These..."practical jokes" of yours are getting out of HAND!

[ she says with a rather shrill tone to accent that point]

You say you're feeling "caged"...and honestly, I CAN understand why you might. One could expect a certain level of rigid structure in a private facility like this, but Dr. Starr, despite her reputation in her field and for all her prooven ability, is very....high strung. I can only imagine how her DAUGHTER, Courtney must feel, having her as a mother.

I don't mean to sound insulting...it can't be easy, being a widow, a single mother with a young daughter, a doctor, a headmistress all at once. she does a remarkable job of balancing but at the same time she just seems to be rather...UNHINGED.

But I know YOU Nicolas. You've ALWAYS been mischeivious and looking for a laugh. You HAVE gone out of your way to annoy those who you felt you could. You KNOW I don't tolerate that and when you tested me...as most children will do with their parents...you were dealt with accordingly. Don't act like you dont know how you were raised.

I raised you to RESPECT adults and authority. Dr. Starr, despite her apparent issues...IS the headmistress of this school. She has a responsibility to the student body and the PARENTS of those students, along with the faculty and the state! She carries a tremendous burden on her shoulders on TOP of whatever personal issues she's dealing with. What you're doing....constantly drawing her attention...her WRATH is not serving you OR her well.

[ sighing. Dominique takes a tissue from her purse and dabs away Nicolas' tear. Looking into his eyes]

I know you're not crazy...OR "psychotic". Detective Armstrong knows that too. Other members of faculty know that and i'm sure there are students here you have forged friendships with that would vouch for you as well.

You've got people here pulling for you. First of all, ME. I just saved your ass back there in Dr. Starr's office. I don't know if you realize how close you came to having your LIFE RUINED by the punishment she had planned for you. I couldn't allow her go there...not without fighting for you and I would have gone FURTHER if she had not been surprisingly so willing to meet me half way. That tells me that DESPITE her well broadcast disdain for you, that she knows what I say is true- you ARE a good kid at your core. You've got talent and lots to offer. She wouldnt have accepted your enrollment in the first place if that werent the case.

I STILL want to know what the hell you were thinking! Dressing up as the Woodsboro slasher and swooping about the campus terrorizing people. Nicolas...that was a DUMB thing to do.

[ Dominique takes her fist and lightly "knocks" Nicolas' forehead as if knocking on a door to see if "anybody was home."]

[ Dominique takes her fist and lightly "knocks" Nicolas' forehead as if knocking on a door to see if "anybody was home."]

I didn't see the harm...people dress up as the Son of Sam, Ted Bundy, Jack the Ripper, the Unabomber and Jeffrey Dahmer for Halloween...most of THEM would be comtemporaries for this guy. In any case, I meant no harm, I mean it is not even logical that it was REAL...the guy died 15, 20 years ago right? In any case, the apology will be easy to write. I don't want anyone to be harmed over some Halloween fun and I am sorry anyone was.

Family time

[ Dominique studied Nicolas as he replied. He seemed to show remorse now, which was an improvement, but he still defened his choice of action.]

I understand what you're saying, Nicolas. But "people" don't always make good choices. They may dress as these infamous figures but is it in good taste?

I imagine, that Dr. Starr would not have set out to crucify you for this had a student here not been so traumatized by what you did that it put her in the infirmary. The girl's family demanded action or they would level a lawsuit. Which, if Dr. Starr had gone forward with her original plan, would've required ME to hire legal counsel for you and the resulting legal battle would have been bad for you, for hillcrest, for everyone directly or indirectly involved.

What are the ODDS of someone who was impacted by the Woodsboro Slasher ending up here?

[ Neither Dominique nor Nicolas had any idea the irony of her question just now, considering a certain mother daughter duo and their own forever altered lives because of a mass murderer, firmly among those present at Hillcrest.]

But that aside, it should be obvious that this prank...regardless of how you feel about it...was the straw that broke the camel's back. Dr. Starr doesnt appreciate your brand of humour but you know I haven't always found it to be acceptable either. Would you test ME in this way knowing that?

[ She looked at him with all seriousness]

A joke is a joke...but etiquitte does NOT take a back seat to humour, young man. The outcome and consequences of your joke, no matter HOW unintended, could be far more costly than any sense of entertainment you sought to achieve. That is all Dr. Starr and more importantly I want you to understand.

Be who you are, but be aware of your environment and what is /isn't appropriate for the setting. Acknowledge that you are apart of a student body FILLED with different backgrounds and experiences.

[ gently placing her hand along the side of Nicolas' head, she caresses his face and smiles]

I've taken you around the world with me in my travels as a singer and a business woman. At your age, You've experienced more culture than some of these students or even their parents could imagine. Act like you know better, honey.

Get your act together and get past this foolishness. There are other ways to find humour and entertainment that don't involve calamity, destruction of property and causing panic among unsuspecting students.

Is that clear?

[ she asked in a maternal firm tone as she cupped Nicolas' chin in her hand ]

And since you'll have some ...extra time on your hands due to your three day suspension, I expect that letter of apology to be written tout suite and I want to be copied on it.

[Dominique stands up, taking her purse]

I must be going. You'll be okay, my darling, just straight up.

[pointing her finger at him and waving it in warning]

I mean it!

I'll call to check on you in several days.

[ Hugging her nephew, she makes her way to the door and turns back to look at him.]

Happy Halloween, Nicolas. I know it's not quite what you wanted...but let this be a lesson learned.

[ Dominique nodded and winked at him in encouragement before opening the door and exiting. The regal woman walks down the hall, past an alcolve, unaware that Ava and Delilah had just quickly hid in there to avoid being seen by her. She exits the dorms and makes her way across the grounds to her vehicle, leaving Hillcrest. ]

Delilah and Ava continued to talk until a woman's figure dressed all in black caught Ava's attention. Glancing to the left she caught sight of Nicolas' aunt, and she seemed pissed. Looking at Delilah, both girls paused for a moment before simultaneously gathering their stuff and quickly following the woman as she made her way towards Nicolas' dorm room.

As they reached the boys dorms, the bell tower rang indicating class was in session. Obviously they would be skipping their first class to play detective, but it was for a good cause....well, a nosy cause. :p Quietly sneaking down the hall, she could hear Nicolas' aunt scolding him for what had happened. Ava's eyebrows furrowed hearing how Dr. Starr wanted to have him arrested and labeled as a stalker. Giving Delilah an "are you kidding me look", she couldn't believe how unreasonable Courtney's mom was being.

"Oh come on! Do you know how many kids wear that scream mask for Halloween? God, i've seen people in Woodsboro wear that damn mask."

She whispered in anger. Delilah was definitely right. Courtney was going through something, but her mom was obviously as well. There was no reason someone should get THAT worked up over a prank unless she was already stressed about something else. Realizing Dr. Starr was on a war path today, Ava looked at Delilah with a slightly concerned face.

"I'm thinking skipping class was probably not the best idea today.."

and then there were three

Don't worry about it.

<< Ava and Delilah were suitably started by the sound & apparent arrival of Courtney, who had NOT been there moments ago.>>

My mom's busy & Mike is with her. She IS on the warpath but he'll help her...he's got more brains & heart than i thought a guy looking like him would.

<< Courtney said coldly as she stands there, slightly posted with her arms folded.>>

Just better make sure we're all in HER class this afternoon.

<< she looks at them rather curiously as they stare at her in disbelief. HOW did she know what her mother was doing at this very moment? They were unaware that she'd been watching...courtesy of a scrying spell she cast using a crystal.>>

Well...why are you just standing there? Open the door so we can go in! Besides...Nicolas needs you right now anyway.

<< Clearly Courtney was not worried. If anything, she was growing more and more disillusioned with her mother and ALL of this and so it was starting to mean less and less to her.>>

Ava said:
I know...but we can't exactly help what we don't know, D. She is SO CLOSE to opening up, but something keeps preventing her from doing it. [sighing] Honestly, I think the best way to help her is to keep her distracted. Whether it's that gathering she wants to go to, or the private party we're throwing...I think if we push too hard, she'll pull away even more.

Delilah gave Ava a skeptical look. She wasn’t sure that brushing Courtney’s problems under the carpet was the way to go.

“I think maybe she’s been distracting herself from her problems long enough – looks like they’re starting to back up on her…”

Delilah frowned. But then they were interrupted by Ava’s phone dinging. Delilah took another sip of her soda while Ava checked it.

Ava said:
”Guess who's coming to the paaaarrrty.”

Delilah looked at Ava’s phone and started to blush uncontrollably. She unsuccessfully tried to hide her smile.

“Oh, shut up.”

Ava said:
”And he's asking about yoouu!"

Delilah playfully hit Ava on the arm, trying to stifle a giggle.

“Shut up, Ava!”

A fierce woman dressed in black passed by her and Ava, and Delilah recognized her as Nicolas' Aunt Dominique. She turned to give Ava a look, and Ava was already giving her that same look, so she gathered up her bag and threw the soda can in the recycling bin, and followed Ava to Nicolas' dorm. The two girls, of course, were already pros at sneaking into the boy's dormitory ;)

Ava was incensed about how Nicolas was being treated - and even to Delilah it seemed a bit over the top. Nicolas might be a prankster, but he wasn't a bad kid.

Ava said:
"I'm thinking skipping class was probably not the best idea today.."

Delilah waived her hand in the air, indicating that it was nothing.

"We'll just tell Mr. Summers we're having 'women's troubles' - trust me, he won't say a thing."

Delilah laughed, then JUMPED out of her skin as Courtney suddenly appeared as if out of nowhere.

Courtney said:

Delilah just stared at her. What the hell was going on? Cause this just wasn't normal.

Nicolas sat on his bed, head in his hands. He loved his aunt, but he was missing SOMETHING. He could not put his finger on it and he feared that telling Auntie Dee would hurt her...and he did not want to do THAT. But he was pretty certain he wasn't making the rest of the year with no mistakes. And leaving the only friends he ever really knew made him even more sad.

Damn!

He continued to sit..turning the light off with TK and allowing the darkness to envelope the room.

Delilah: "We'll just tell Mr. Summers we're having 'women's troubles' - trust me, he won't say a thing."

Ava was about to agree knowing that Mr. Summers avoided anything that had to do with teenage woman issues, when Courtney suddenly appeared. Like Delilah, Ava jumped, placing her hand on her chest.

"Jesus, Courtney!"

She whispered more loudly.

"You know not to sneak up on me. When I get startled my powers go all weird....I could of shot a lightning bolt up your ass!"

One of the things Ava had to work on with Ms. Monroe. When she's focused on her abilities, they're fantastic. However when she becomes startled or too nervous to fully concentrate, her powers become unpredictable. It was getting better as the school year went on, however it was still a bit touchy.

Courtney: "Well...why are you just standing there? Open the door so we can go in! Besides...Nicolas needs you right now anyway."

"How do you know he---nevermind."

Courtney randomly knew certain things, and Ava just learned to not ask questions. They were never answered anyway. Walking up to Nicolas' dorm, she tapped her knuckles against his door and slowly opened it. The room was dark.

"Nic?"

Opening the door fully, the light from the hallway lit the room. Ava saw him laying on his bed looking worse for the wear.

"Hey....you okay?"

"Nic?"

"Hey....you okay?"

Oh..hey ladies! I am good...good. Just the same-old same-old.

Nicolas trying to put on a brave front, he hated to bring people down, probably part of the reason why he joked SO much.

I was just missing a hug...here, let's fix that.

Nicolas was up in a flash, hugging Ava and winking at the other two as he did so.

Better. NOW, to figure out how the hell I am going to survive the YEAR on probation. Any ideas? Or should I just go for broke and enjoy whatever time I have left?

Hillcrest- Nicolas' dorm

<< Courtney was the last one to enter Nicolas' room.>>

<< She shuts the door and as Ava draws closest to Nicolas to check on him while Delilah is nearby, Courtney noticeably stands back, near a poster on the wall.>>

<< She has her arms folded, leaning back against the wall with one leg bended slightly and her high heel on wall.>>

<< She looked on with cold detachment as he hugged Ava tightly and winked at Delilah and herself.>>

you know...most people know the benefit of flying UNDER the radar?

<< she says coldly>>

The Warden

<< what she often referred to her own mother as>>

has a serious hard on for you King.

You have NO idea how upset she is with you right now and it goes BEYOND this latest "prank" you pulled.

<< once again, Courtney seemed to imply she knew more BUT as Ava and Delilah had long come to realize...it was better not to ask questions. Courtney wouldnt tell them anything if she didnt want to.>>

I have...empathy for you, actually. I know what its like. You get to a point where you don't even know if you're BREATHING too loud.

<< Ava and Delilah remember how fractious the situation between Courtney and Nicolas used to be when he first showed up. The mercurial, dark, bitchy girl vs. the bold, energetic, brash prankster? It was a match made in HELL.>>

<< On one occasion, Nicolas created a video using Courtney's image as "the wicked witch of the east" getting a house dropped on her another with her as "the wicked witch of the west" screaming "I'm melting" after having a bucket of water thrown on her. Playing on the rumours about her being a witch. HE thought it was hillarious and so did many others. Courtney was enraged but did not immediately retaliate. She ALSO never brought the incident up to her mother. Despite being the daughter of Dr. Starr, Courtney never seemed to view it as a "perk" on campus nor did she tap into her mother for help dealing with her antagonists.>>

<< a week later on one seemingly normal evening, Delilah and Ava had once again snuck into the boys' wing of the dorms and arrived to Nicolas' room JUST as he emerged from his dorm, SHIVERING and stammering about how "Courtney dragged me to hell!" saying she had pulled him into a disc and took him to a place he could only describe as HELL and how she looked like a "demonic queen waiting to steal his soul or something" HOWEVER he had no proof of it. Despite the fact that Courtney COULD be ANYWHERE in the blink of an eye, she never even acknowledged a subsequent encounter with him and no one knew that her discs lead anywhere outside of normal reality.>>

<< it was one of the RARE times that HE was left scared and totally at a loss and that's when Ava and Delilah stepped in to help those two find a way to make peace...before things got out of HAND.>>

<<Courtney, at first would have no part of it and even threatened to "make him disappear FOREVER if he crossed her again" but Ava and Delilah both managed to convince her to calm down and give him a chance. She surprised them when suddenly agreed to their request.>>

<< With time, she and Nicolas found solid, peacefull ground between them. He was still leery of her and yet intrigued by her. She no longer saw him as a "loud mouth piece of shit" but rather an "ok guy if he'd shut his mouth more often" and of course he was with Ava...which could be amusing OR nauseating at any given moment. ;)>>

<< so there they were...the fab, if not freaky four, who now had an unsual friendship dynamic between them. one ONLY understood by them.>>

<< they were all too aware of the scrutiny of Dr. Starr a.k.a, the warden.>>

But Nicolas...you dont know what it is that you did.

<< the WAY she says this...>>

Morgan: MOM!?

<< Karen reappears outside, unharmed. But as she slowly makes her way to her daughter and Alycia, Morgan exclaims.>>

Morgan: OMIGAWD MOM! He's STILL COMING!

<< all three women look with utter HORROR as the SHAPE can be seen, lumbering forward through the hellfire ...>>

<< confirms what Ava said. There HAD to be more to it. Yes the girl who Nicolas spooked out was tragic enough, but Dr. Starr's reaction was so severe ...it seemed PERSONAL. Like she was REACTING to something she'd experienced before, even the issue of the other student. Now, with Courtney speaking to Nicolas, Ava and Delilah as she was, with the look on her face...Ava and Delilah's suspicions were confirmed.>>

<< BUT they also knew, for every further inroad Courtney gave them to her, they should NOT overstep. THAT would cause an extreme, if not violent reaction from Courtney>>

I don't want to see you be crushed by my mom. NOBODY in this room could ....handle living with her like I have.

<< her hand is noticeably balled into a fist and she actually LOOKS DARKER in her countenance!>>

But you just...don't know.

<< she snaps out of that tense moment and her icy violet eyes lock on to Nicolas>>

Just keep your mouth SHUT and keep a low profile OKAY?

I....don't want to see you gone.

You three....

<< another moment where she seemed to be opening up again.>>

You're my....only....f...FRIENDS.

<< Since her original BEST friend, Alison, Alison's brother Cameron and Haleigh- all near and dear to MORGAN were all BUTCHERED by her mutant sociopath monster murderer of a BROTHER.>>

<< She looks at Ava, Delilah and Nicolas...and can't HELP but remember Alison, Cameron and Haleigh. The pain...the survivor guilt...ALL OF IT wells up in her and she inhales deeply, turning her head away. she feels a pang of SHAME as she speaks BUT she knows more than any of them what's at stake TODAY of all days especially when it comes to her mother. how it even came to be that way. even as Courtney...MORGAN struggles to be FREE of her mother's OVERPROTECTION, she doesnt want anyone else to be PUNISHED for unwittingly ADDING to the FEAR.>>

You HAVE to stay here. You're the ONLY ones who give me HOPE...that I will...find my way. out of this....

<<She didnt say what "THIS" was but Delilah could almost FEEL the swirling of Courtney's emotions. There's something there...that HAUNTS her and apparently her mother too and Nicolas somehow touched on it. It was a wild assumption but where Courtney was concerned, the FAR OUT seemed to make more sense than anything else.>>

I shouldnt have come here. I blew off class so I could...

Nicolas...heed my warning okay?

<< Courtney doesnt say goodbye or another word. a stepping disc flashes open and she immediately begins to sink down into before TELEPORTING away and the disc closes, leaving Ava, Delilah and now Nicolas rather dumbstruck.>>
