Has anyone read "The Serpent and the Rainbow"? have you ever wondered if there's MORE to the idea of a "zombie" than the george romero formula?

I found it while doing some reading up on some other ideas i plan on using in the Six. this article actually educated me and CONFIRMED some things my mother had once told me about the idea of zombies BEYOND the creatures in horror movies.

what's your thought on this?
 
I think that the idea of zombies is not far-fetched, especially considering how many people probably suffered injuries or diseases that left them devoid of higher brain function but otherwise capable. All you would need to do is figure out how to do such a thing and you're golden.
 
so with that statement, i'd like to ask....(this is assuming youve seen the resident evil films or played the games) since depictations in movies are based in some way on real life science or other factual situations...do you think that someone or some entity (corporation, government etc) is already exploring such abominable biotechnological experiments involving humans that there could be zombies or other "bio hazards" , situations kept under secret?

some people would dismiss this as conspiracy or paranoia...but thats not what im getting at here, i just want to explore the fact that there's ALOT of things going on that we dont know about. things in plain sight, yet never seen. movies, books that discuss things like this..these things just dont happen out of thin air. there's a basis behind them.

in Resident Evil, the global entity "Umbrella" is the most powerfull commercial entity on the planet, 9 out of 10 homes in america contain/use their products. on the SURFACE they specialize in computer technology, medical products and health/beauty aids but COVERTLY they rake in MASSIVE profits from military technology, genetic experimentation and bio/viral weapons engineering.

we know companies that have global influence (microsoft for example) and we know people/governments who make no bones about cover ups and abuse of power (George Bush anyone?) so if we can see parallels like this...then how UNLIKELY is it that there could be zombies or some OTHER seemingly outrageous situations taking place in the area that lies beneath?

Resident Evil had something called the "T-VIRUS" a parallel? I STILL personally feel that AIDS was an ENGINEERED virus that got out of hand and reached BEYOND the "intended demographic". That's my personal opinion based on the reading i've done through the last few years and it would be ridiculous to believe that a virus like this just occurred NATURALLY.
 
I think that you could be on to something. On a simpler scale, they are already testing INCREDIBLE chemical weapons that were engineered.

One example is VX, a chemical weapon that WE HAVE capable of killing a goat in under a minute with a simple eye swab of it.

Similarly, am I the only one alarmed that we keep all strains of smallpox in this country, including the 1918 version that killed millions. As for AIDS, the fact that Black men were unwitting test subjects in Syphilis experiments in this country in the last century gives that idea credence.

The key would be to find a way to chemically lobotomize someone, that is, take away their higher emotions and will; indeed, the chemical Thorazine already has been shown to have such an effect. The next step would be to condition the chemically lobotomized patient to obey someone unquestioningly and swiftly, not a big hurdle to pass if ethics are not involved here.
 
Well, there will always be people with whom ethics are not a concern.

I'm not going to say this is IMPOSSIBLE... I'm sure it is completely possible.... if one were in the know of the kinds of things it would involve.

The problem is that the human mind is SO complex. Trying to separate free will and comprehension would be very difficult and not only that, it would likely be detrimental to the intended outcome.

I would imagine we're MUCH closer to creating lifelike Artificial Intelligence, which is something that we should also be careful with. There is a plethora of sci-fi material based on the creation overtaking the creator. there IS such a thing as too smart and as much as I appreciate modern conveniences, I STILL feel we have become far too dependent on technology as it is.
 
True AI is a lot far off then most would think. Real functioning congitive abilities are pretty far off in programing terms. i presonally believe when computers gain a level of thought processing on par with chimps its really going to be time to worry.

on the issue of depence on technology. its really true we are far too dependate on outdated and for the most part jery riged information systems. Systems and controls are too intertwined and without adequte failsafes so when one fails they all go. the biggest problem is no one sees the problems before they happen its not till a system fails or something impossilbe takes place that we start to fix or change things.(3 inches of rain brought down the NY state mass transit system)

i think the idea of using viruses and chemical conditoning on the human mind isn't too far off. substances to induce trance link states have been around for all of human history. the only real question is what kind of state to force in test subjects. the primary goal would be keeping critical reasoning ability without losing imagination while downplaying free will and any undersierable outside stimuli (in this cause pain) i can honestly see military experiments in behavioral conditioning to produce more "perfect soilders"
 
Farrah, I do think your on to something. I've always believed the government has / is currently running covert experiments, especially on humans. Maybe I've read far too many horror novels or seen too many films. I honestly believe that the government is experimenting on humans via chemicals and other toxins to create the "perfect soldier." Let's be honest, we are losing a lot of men and women in the war, plus its costing the Government billions of dollars. How easy would it be to experiment? Sort of like in Resident Evil 2.

With so many diseases being spread by an open cut or a sore, who knows what could be transmitted into the blood stream.
 
I wonder if you think its possible for the government to preform covert experiments on soldiers do you think its possible they might also be conducting research on the population. They might let a chemical accidentally spill or something mixed in with vaccinations. What if the government is also trying to actively use genetic or behavioral abnormalities present in the general public to military industrial use?
 
"possible"? honey its happened BEFORE many itmes throughout history.

Lithium in 7 up products was unleashed on the populace with full knowledge by the FDA in an attempt to see "the effects of extended exposure to psychotropic drugs" of course its not that way NOW but at one time it was.

STD vaccine testing on prisoners (and sections of the outside population such as the Syphillis experiments on black gay men in 1979 that resulted in the G.R.I.D.S outbreak (which is the earlier form of AIDS)

just to name a few examples
 
I can't believe they the stuff they keep out the history books. that never even came up in the history curriculum.

But thats more passive research I wonder whether they have a more active chemical/biological initiative. I mean something beyond introducing a chemical for "investigative" purposes. like using people for virus breeding or wide scale genetic mapping/manipulation.I don't think in todays day and age we watch government activities like we used to. (well we never did that well but its more lax now) Its enough to make a person give up on government and future.
 
I don't play around when it comes to zombies. In fact, I've got a zombie evacuation plan for the inevitable zompocalypse occurs. Actually, it's a lot like my alien evacuation plan, now that I think about it, but whatever.

this brought up some valid ideas on causes of Zombie-ism (?) and states we were talking about including Brain Parasites, Rage/Rabies Viruses, Neurotoxins and Nano-technology.
