The #1 artist in the WORLD? Is it Michael Jackson, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Elvis Presley, Whitney Houston, or even (GAG) Mariah Carey?? The answer is: There IS no definative answer because there is no organization that has recorded GLOBAL music sales. To possibly (and most accurately) determine who is (and it could be more than ONE person) #1, several criteria must be taken into consideration and this is in ADDITION to "official sources" such as newspapers, record lables, ablum and single sales, soundscan tabulations etc.

The major CONSTRAINTS in attempting to accurately determine the #1 artist on a global scale include: Bias towards specific artists/groups who have had success in specific countries/regions; Bias toward MODERN/current artists ( there is now a genre spectrum of music to listen to which limits the number of listeners); Bias towards MODERN artists ( Comparitively less successfull modern artists will have sold more records as global spending power and population have increased. Also, older artists would suffer from bias because their record sales are less likely to have been accurately tracked [soundscan didnt debut until the mid 1990's] and estimates of their earlier sales is likely to be more vague. ) ; Bias toward older artists particularly those who began their recording career since 1990 may have experienced some loss of sales due to illegal downloading of tracks; Fan sites/Press articles/certification authorities/ and record companies have been known to inflate record sales claims; Inflated claims for artists who have performed in different acts during their musical careers -sometimes all of the sales data is attributed to an individual artist (e.g. results for Paul Mccartney & the Wings / The Beatles are mutually exclusive); Inconsistencies between the sources of various statistics - For example world sales are often compared to US sales (RIAA and soundscan certify US sales ONLY)

The FACT is that "the best selling musical act in history" CANNOT be accurately determined. However Michael Jackson, The Beatles and Elvis Presley have been given the title by various sources.

Here is a clear (and surprising) look at Artists by reputed sales :

To date, other artists such as Barbara Striesand, Britney Spears and many more popular names have reached the 50, 75 to 100 million mark but based on all available/accurate/up to date information would not qualify for consideration of the title "#1 artist in the world".

And there you have an accurate, unbiased look at a topic that has been debated around the world many times over. Comments are welcomed.

If i had to chose from the top 5 this goes to The Beatles without a doubt. 4 guys from Liverpool began as a bunch of nobodies and left the world as a movement and one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands of all time. They influenced a life time of pop culture, music and people with no known peers.

well BOTH of my girls (madonna and cher) made the 2nd tier of this list...and considering that that's a GLOBAL charting...that's pretty damn impressive.

i HATE the beatles. maybe its because they are a band that my mother's generation was nuts about...maybe its because very few of their songs grabbed my attention (the most notabe exception being "I am the walrus" which induced fits of teary eyed laughter in my friends and i during highschool) or maybe its because i feel like the Rolling Stones had more SOUL than the Beatles ever could and the Stones charted in the second tier so thats good for me.

I am also not a Beatles fan. I do have a lot of repect for them, but I do not see what all of the fuss is really about. Some of etheir stuff is good, but not worthy of all of THAT, IMHO.

I have mad love for Michael of course, and it was good (and completely expected) to see the Bee Gees and the Stones on Tier 2.

I was also glad to see Barry White get in ther on Tier 3. I am a BIG fan of his.

I was very surprised but thrilled to see Cher sharing the second tier with Madonna. I know she's had iconic success but even I didnt know her exact album sales status was THIS high. Kids today dont think anything of Cher but even though she's technically "before my time"...that woman has my respect as a singer, an actress and she pretty much is the ORIGINAL "one name" Diva. She's been doing the damn thing since the 60's and isnt stopping YET.

I knew Michael would be at the top or near top of this listing, even if he is a freakshow of his former self today...his accomplishments have cemented him and he can at least rest in that if nothing else.

there were many other POPULAR names such as Kylie Minogue, Gloria Estafan, Bob Marley, Blondie, Nat King Cole, the Spice Girls and even SADE who came in at the 75 million to 100 million tier or the bottom tier of 50 million to 75 million tier but i didnt want to put them in because that would have made the post so long and i know some people here have such SHORT attention spans LOL.

but even if someone got in at the 50 million to 75 million tier...THAT is saying alot because this is a GLOBAL charting...not just the U.S. Eminem and 50 Cent were NO WHERE on the list (HA HA! ) neither was Tupac. In fact...one thing that became apparent was that any straight up HIP HOP/RAP artists/groups didnt chart on this global listing AT ALL.

Aside from Michael Jackson being a creepy white man now, I love his music from the 80's [and some from the 90's]. So I'm not surprised that he's one of the top artists throughout the world. It's a great accomplishment for any of those artists listed, even in the second catagory.

I'm thrilled Madonna is in the 200-500 million mark. :) I knew she was popular world wide, but it's awesome putting a number to her record sales. I'm not a huge Celine Dion fan but I do love some of her ballots. So I can see why she's up there. I heart Pink Floyd, and I LOVED their 'The Wall' album, but I never knew they were that popular world wide. Pretty cool. I'm not a huge fan of Cher, but I can see why she's up there. She's been in the game for quite some time so it's not hard to believe her record sales are in the 200-500 millions.

As for the third catagory, I'm really surprised U2 wasn't in the second catagory quite frankly. They're a phenomenal band. And i'm also suprised by the Backstreet Boys LOL. I knew they were popular when I was little, but damn...didn't realize HOW popular lol! With them up there, i'm surprised Britney Spears or N'Sync aren't up in the third catagory as well. Those three were obviously the teen idols of my generation.

Interesting that Eminem is not on the list somewhere after what was listed. I have him at about 70 million albums sold worldwide.

agreed...i have copies of Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad...EASY crowd pleasers at some of my dance parties past and (soon) present...and i swear..if i'd been a grown woman when Michael was in his "off the wall" phase....he NEVER would have turned his eye to children (allegedly of course :D ) because I wouldve been ALL over him. he was fine as HELL back then. someone really shouldve told him NOT to go to the plastic surgeon! <<sigh>>

About Madonna, this list also prooves DEFINATIVELY that she's sold MORE ALBUMS than Janet AND that bitch Mariah Carey LOL :haha:

I didnt think they'd make the top three tier group either. Nsync was in the 75 million to the 100 million tier...but when you consider that the Beach Boys, the Beatles and the Rolling stones are basically the original BLUE PRINT for "boy bands"...and those three groups are all in the top TWO tiers...i guess it makes sense that their 20th/21rst century babies would be not far behind. Britney was in the 75 million to 100 million tier, along with Barabara Striesand and Gloria Estafan.

Garrick are you basing Em's sales on US certifications such as RIAA or soundscan ONLY? because remember...it has to include MORE than that when you're talking about the global scale. and really, is hip/hop a global phenomena or just a U.S. specific phenomena? I know there are acts who try to pass themselves off as "hip/hop" across the globe but im being honest when i say ....NEXT!

Hip hop is more specifically an African-American art form (much of present hip-hop is loosely referred to by me in this way) and a mostly North American phenomenon. I would say it is comparable to other regional music forms but has increased greatly in world scope over time. It cannot, however, be compared to pop music or rock-and-roll, however, when it comes to numbers. I will say that it has been very influential in its small number of years out. Madonna herself has felt and reflected that influence, especially considering her latest effort will be the brainchild of Timbaland, a HIP-HOP producer and many influential dance choreographers with which she has learned from/collaborated with include more than a few hip-hop choreographers.

So while hip-hop is probably not as global as some others would claim (there are many reasons for that IMHO, including racism) it is an influential force in music and in THAT way can be considered a global phenomenon. It simply cannot me measured in everyday metrics such as individual artist album sales.

The Eminem numbers are largely based on simply perusing the web for figures and what I knew going into the discussion. I do happen to know that he is really big in Europe for example, and has gone platinum in several countries other than the US...
