so now i'm thinking...what's a versus that has never been covered before?

and then (thanks to equinox) it occurred to me!!

The Dire Wraiths vs. The Brood!

two alien races that are capable of traveling vast distances cross space!

here's a run down.

Dire Wraiths: a "sisterhood" , that deviated from the skrull gene pool/blood line due to the dark nebula exposure. these females possess extremely thick and grotesque bodies, and are poor physical fighters BUT they possess ENORMOUS mystical power. They can also shape shift into "deathwings", large bird like creatures that can fly, phase through objects and project concussive blasts of acid flame.

then can drain the energy and life of any being they attack and assume that person's form.

their weaknesses appear to be metal and extreme cold and while they are not the greatest physical fighters, they make up for it by having deadly magicks and high numbers.

the brood: highly intelligent, insect like alien race that also travels through space and takes a hostile, agressive attitude towards any other race/species that wont submit to them. they are technolocially advance, capable of "hive" like communication or individual thought.

they possess the ability of flight and are savage fighters, often dismembering their targets and eating them..if not implanting them as hosts for their eggs.

later generations of the brood emerged as mutant hybrids following their second attack on earth and battle with the claremont era x-men. these brood now could shape shift between human form, transitional forms and full on brood form AND in addition to their own native abilities they took on the mutant powers of their host.

for THIS fight...the species will use their own abilities and weapons. the fight will range from space to earth.

who do you think will win?

Oh wow...this is a though one. At a glance the two species obviously seem to be equally matched in every way possible. Both are incredibly power, are biproducts of Celestial Engineering and are incredibly skilled in the ways of the warrior. I see no possible way that one of the two could trample over the other. I theorize that they would end up annihilating each other thus ending the reign of both the Dire Wraith Sisterhood and the Brood Hive.

you say they were both the product of Celestial engineering? when did this revelation come about? i always knew the Dire Wraiths to be an offshoot of the Skrulls, warped by exposure to the dark nebula but i didnt know about the celestial influence.

I think the wraiths have an advantage because of their magicks, and the fact that they can transform into "Death Wings" that can fly, are intangible and can fire blasts of deadly acidic flames.

the brood , while vicious and deadly with their fighting, dont possess any energy projection ability unless they are using hosts with mutant powers. they have technology on their side though and the wraiths have prooven woefully vulnerable to a variety of high powered artillery shells and weaponry...even a powerless Storm managed to bring one close to death by unloading a 9 mm glock into its stomach.

it really depends on who launches the strongest offensive i think. either side has the ability to decimate the other if they gain enough of an advantage....but the brood would probably try their best to harness the wraiths as hosts for their eggs or even a new broodqueen with magickal power.

Nearly every known race in the Marvel Universe except for the Watchers and the Negative Zone Inhabitants are products of Celestial Tampering. Since the Dire Wraiths are actually Skrull they would have the same genetic material as their predecessors and who knows? A Celestial may have forced them into the dark nebula without them knowing it. But the Celestial tampering is the major factor in the rise of Empires in the Marvel Universe it is also the reason for their war against the Watchers who believe that younger races should be allowed to grow by themselves without outside influence.

i would have ot favor the brood. The Dire wraiths are tough, but the Brood in my opinion win due to their superior technology (to which the Wraiths are PARTICULARLY vulnerable) and their reproductive skill. The Brood kills to make many more Brood, the Wraiths simply substitute, which does not increase their number sufficiently to keep up in a protracted conflict.

but the right spell by the wraiths could peform a MASS EVACUATION of the brood hive, and the brood dont have the ability to phase, or shapeshift, BOTH abilities would give the Wraiths an advantage in close quarters fight.

SOME magick users have sufficient power to overwhelm technology (witness Amanda Sefton's mother, Margali Zsardos, reducing a trio of sentinels to a pile of melted slag with her spells, not even Dr. Strange could do that as he was shown to be eliminated by the sentinels in "Days of future past")

From what i've seen of the Wraiths and their magicks...they can cause some wide spread damage, the only thing that saps them of the strength is extreme cold (kind of ironic considering they come from a dark nebula) or brutal technological assaults they have no time to counter.

I agree. However, the Brood are sufficiently numerous and prolific in reproducing that I would still think that eventually they get the upper hand. A Dire Wraith may be worth 2 of the Brood, but the Brood may have 2 more waiting after she is done with the first two. Just a numbers game for me. In addition, while certain Wraiths could perform serious magic, many of them were relatively unimpressive. I look at their record against ROM, whose tech is probabaly at best equal to the Brood, and it looks worse from there.

Obviously it seems the Brood are the superior race in respect to this battle. But let's not forget the Brood are like any insectoid Hive Mind: the Queen rules all, take her out and the rest will be unable to do a thing. However the Dire Wraith would have to have like I don't know...Captain Universe powers just to get close enough to the Queen in order to kill her (since the Brood protect their Queens quite well.) Also if the Dire Wraiths got a hold of an Omni-Wave Projector then they could just blow the Brood away like they were flies.
