John's Suite
Steel could feel how tense Ava was; she didn't relax at his touch the way she normally did.
He told her how she had done nothing to be ashamed of, that she could do this. That was when her eyes finally met his.
Ava: "I know."
Then why was she acting like this? He loosened his arms, taking a small step backward at her reaction.
Ava: "I'm not thrilled that I have to air out my private business to the entire Inner Circle over scrambled eggs."
"So have mango and pineapple instead."
The corner of his mouth twitched with his attempt at lightening the mood. But she wasn't laughing, and she moved past him, putting more distance between them. He didn't turn around, but stood there, feeling useless.
Ava: "They're going to question my ability to rule. To protect our court and this club when I couldn't even protect myself or my daughter."
He did turn around then, somewhat impressed by the lengths at which she could go to spin her own imagined weakness.
"First, you didn't know you had a daughter, and when you did, you protected her just fine, thank you. I was there. Second, what could anyone of them have done under the same circumstances? What did Alek do any differently? Your rule is solid, and they aren't going to question that. Haleigh and Ashley would never allow it, for one thing."
Ava's back had been to him, but now she turned around.
Ava: "And truthfully I don't know if that's worse, or them realizing that I'm just another one of Alek's whores he can notch off on his bed post."
"Ava, now you're being ridiculous. Even Alek isn't going to pretend it was like that."
And if he did, John would murder him. Quite literally.
Ava: "I'm sorry. I'm just... [through gritted teeth] tired."
He bridged the distance between them. Reaching out for her but then rethinking the gesture and letting his arms fall back to his sides.
"I know. But now that we're home you can finally get some rest. This thing today is all about how you present it: if you act like nothing is wrong then nothing is wrong."
She picked up his sweater and held it out to him. He took from her, and gave her a reassuring smile. He pulled the neck over his head.
"Lily is a blessing for us. It's a start to a new family. You don't need to say any more than that."
He finished pulling the sweater on and smoothed it down over his shirt.
"If the queens want more details you can give it to them privately. It's not anyone else's business."
