Seems like there are quite a few roleplayers on this board and I was just curious how you all got started. I've met people on the net who started on message board, others who started with videogame rpgs and then made the transition, or others (like me) who started with pen and paper games and went from dice rolling to writing my own fiction and roleplaying on message boards.
And for those who do rp, some other questions:
1) Do you have a tendency towards playing a certain character archetype?
2) Do you prefer specific settings and strongly dislike others? And what traditional settings/games have you played before (DnD etc)?
3) What's the best game you've ever roleplayed in?
4) What's your favorite memory from roleplaying?
For myself...
1) I tend towards the swashbuckling extroverted warrior/rogue or the quiet brooding anti-hero. I kindof tailor my roleplaying based on the group I'm playing with. There's been more than one occasion where I wanted to play an introvert but was pretty much forced to take party leadership position because no one else wanted to do much to move the story along or even offer input into what actions the characters should be taking.
2) I like pretty much any setting, though I'm burnt-out on the Forgotten Realms and prefer things with a cyberpunk gothic theme. Vampire is a lot of fun though it's hard to find the right people to play with as it requires more maturity than simple "kill the dragon" themed games.
I've played DnD, Vampire, Alternity, Shadowrun, and a few others I can't remember the names of.
3) The best game I've had the pleasure of playing was an oriental themed game where the players each played ninjas. Lots of political intrigue and cool traps.
4) Memories of my favorite character, Auren Ravidel. I had a timeline of events and stories detailing his rise and fall and constant evolution from the son of a peasant family to a noble of Cormyr. I think if someone invests a lot of time in a character/story it endears them to that character.
