Haleigh laid with her head on his chest... they were both quiet as he held her.... they looked very much like a couple absorbed in post coital bliss... but perhaps bliss wasn't the best word. Haleigh stared off into the distance... intuition that this would be a catalyst for something terrible creeping in on her. She was not naive... she knew their union changed everything.... but something kept her from fully recognizing the severity.
what have i DONE?
She momentarily thought, her internal sense of right and wrong trying to reconcile with the developments... a brief faltering that was quickly corrected for her. What you WANTED.... stop being so weak. You were once a woman who did what she wanted, got what she wanted with her head held high. Now you have allowed yourself to become soft... and for WHAT? For a group of people that conceded both Nicolas AND you were lost causes as SOON as you were gone? Your lingering loyalty to them is both misplaced and illogical. They have forsaken you BOTH. Your time with them is OVER. Your place now belongs with someone much more deserving of your fidelity. You've always been capable of adapting to changing circumstances. Embrace your new fate and do it with conviction.
Haleigh watched Nicolas dry off and begin to get dressed.... she gave him a satiated smile.... bathed in a resurgence of devotion... intoxicated by it. She ran her hand across his back as she moved next to him, finding something had been set out for her to wear as well.... it was a beautiful blood red silk gown, the cut empire silhouette, with the high waist decorated by a textured damask of golden markings that closely resembled the markings on Nic's skin. It hung on her shoulders by thin straps of alternating red and gold silk that were tightly braided, it showcased a tease of cleavage with a wide, plunging neckline, and the lower portion of the gown was Fortuny pleated but loose and fluid. It was intricately designed and clearly crafted of the finest materials for royalty or otherwise exalted beings.
There was something else set out for Haleigh as well... slender gold upper-arm bands and thick gold 'cuff' style braclets that were engraved with the same markings and adorned with rubies. Haleigh had an errant impression that they looked like SHACKLES... Now you're just being melodramatic. They're beautiful.... wear them. And so she slipped them on.... there was a three faced mirror nearby... and she went to it, revolving slowly in front of it to admire the dress. She turned to face Nicolas, holding out her hands, a sly smile on her lips.
"I feel like Cleopatra...[pointing at him, her smile growing] You look like a Pharaoh."
They were led into a throne room.... it was as grand and enchanting as Haleigh had come to expect of the place... the otherworldy being whose machinations they were ALL subject to sat nobly on a throne like the deity Haleigh suspected him of being. He prompted them to ask questions.... and the devil-may-care nonchalance [oft mistaken for insolence] that Haleigh was known for asserted itself.
"I know who you are." It sounded a little accusatory... but as she continued she sounded less righteous and more like she was simply identifying him. "Given Isis' involvement, I of course considered Osiris.... he is Yin to her Yang... where she is life and rebirth, he is Death, Lord of the Underworld... but I've eliminated him as a possibility. First of all... Isis cherised Osiris. She wouldn't want to destroy him.... and second... Osiris had GREEN skin.... and you don't. No.... you are the one whom Isis had a reason to despise.... the one who killed her husband... Set. The Egyptian God of storms, chaos, and destruction. Set was also associated with the color Red.... as in, this red gown I'm wearing... the red tapestries hanging in this room...."
