The Grammy Awards 2008

This year, the show's theme was about blending the "old" with the "new."

We saw various and some very unlikely duets throughout the evening. We also saw many veteran artists such as Bruce Springsteen and Chaka Khan winning awards.

The BIG winners for the evening were Amy Winehouse and Kanye West...while in a surprise turn, veteran Jazz artist Herbie Hancock took home the highly coveted "ALBUM OF THE YEAR" award.

Some of the evening's surprising duet performances included:

Fergie and John Legend

Rhianna and Morris Day & The Time

Kid Rock & Keely Smith (winner of the very FIRST Grammy Award back in 1958)

Lang Lang and Herbie Hancock

Beyonce' and Tina Turner (introduced by Cher)

Alicia Keys and Frank Sinatra (ala' Natalie Cole & and her father's "duet @ the 1992 Grammys)

Other big performances came from Kanye West, who performed a highly stylized version of "Stronger" and a somber tribute of "Hey mama" in honor of his late mother, Donda West. As well as Amy Winehouse, who performed live via satellite, giving a coy version of "Rehab" and "You know i'm no good".

Kanye (true to form), while not AS arrogant as he usually is, STILL found time to be an insufferable ASS when he won "Best rap album". he proceeded to give Amy Winehouse his "blessing", saying "If I'm not the one to win album of the year, then Amy Winehouse should...but i still deserve it just as much as she does." When both he AND Amy lost to Herbie Hancock, Kanye skipped appearences at high profile after parties and opted for a few photo ops with his finace' and his entourage before leaving.

All in all, this year's grammy's was very well put together. It had more energy than some recent past Grammy shows and many of the performances were wonderfull. MY personal fav was when Cher introduced Beyonce' and Tina Turner and Tina STOLE the spotlight from Beyonce EASILY, showing that overrated wannabe how a REAL diva does it.

The most awkward pairing, i thought, was Rhianna with Morris Day & the Time. Morris Day came off like an OLDIES act and Rhianna's "Umbrella" sounded disjointed when mixed in with the tempo and beat of the song he performed (not to mention her outfit was hideous and made her look like an ostrich)

did anyone ELSE see the show? give your thoughts and reactions.

Although I did like Kanye's performance of Hey Mama [it was really touching], I thought his arrogance completely overshadowed what he had just done when he accepted his award. I mean...who the hell goes up there and calls out one of the other nominees saying 'you're albums good but you shouldn't of dropped it in the same year as mine'. He's such a dick which is a shame because he's very talented and makes it difficult for me to really enjoy his music.

I loved Tina Turner's performance although I don't think Beyonce should of been up there. I know the whole 'theme' of the Grammy's was old and new but still...

Loved the Foo Fighters performance! They're such a kick ass band.

Although I don't know what the hell was wrong with Amy Winehouse's dancing during her performace, I really enjoyed it. And the expression on her face after winning best record for Rehab was sooo cute. It's a shame she's so deep into drugs [hopefully rehab has helped her] because she's a really great musician in my opinion.

Aside from that I thought the whole award show was long and boring. There were a few good moments and performances, but really...it was just too drawn out.

Kanye is an ass, plain and simple. the talent he has is totally overshadowed by his total LACK of tact.

I agree, Beyonce looked like a RANK AMATEUR next to Tina Turner....can you believe that Tina is nearly 70? and still kicking and dancing in stilletto heels. i hope I'm that fabulous at that age!

Also, i read today that Natalie Cole criticized Amy Winehouse's big wins, saying "she shouldnt have won for a song about refusing to go to rehab." among other things.

now how the hell is THIS hypocrate going to criticize ANYONE given HER WELL KNOWN and MESSY descent into drugs and alcohol which nearly cost HER her career back in the 90's and this wasnt a "social aquaintence" with drugs...this was hard core drug abuse involving coccaine and heroine. I guess being married to a preacher and having won a grammy for basically covering her father's famous song makes her think she's on a high horse now

I thought the Beatles tribute was pointless. LET IT GO. They arent (and CANT ) get back together...and their music HARDLY appeals to generation x or y (at least not from what i can tell).

Im not a fan of the foo fighters (or that genre of music) but their performance WAS full of energy. it seemed like they really did want to be on the stage.

I also thought Jason Bateman's presence was pointless too.

I thought The Beatles tribute was nice [i forgot to mention that]. I really want to see the movie Across the Universe now because of it. I'm not a huge Beatles fan but I do enjoy some of their songs. I know a bunch of my friends and people I know that are my age are die hard Beatles fans, so I think they're music does appeal to my generation. My SISTERS [who was watching with me] not so much LOL. She's like 'why are there so many OLD people singing?' Mind you she's almost 13 and into Fall Out Boy and Cobra Starship. :p

i guess maybe its just the folks i grew up with. my mom and her sisters were all about the beatles...but me? i could care less. I was a little intrigued by Yoko Ono, simply because of her pariah status among rabid beatles fans but im always ready to change the channel when something about the Beatles comes on an award show.

on the funny side...Alicia Keys looked like a damn fool trying to strut around on stage like that. That hair style she had was ridiculous (something likea mohawk made of balls of weave or something LOL).

I like Alycia Keys, but her hair in her opening performance was ridiculous. In her later performance of 'No One' it looked really good....but whoever her hairstylist was for that mohawk look needs to be fired, immediately.

I also forgot to mention I really liked Carrie Underwood's performance. She has such an amazing voice, it's crazy that it took something like American Idol for her to be discovered.
